My idea for the group social action project is basically coming up with someway to help get pets spayed/neutered. I have been a volunteer at the Sonoma County Animal Shelter for ten years and it's really sad when there are more animals than kennels. If more people were aware of this, I think they would spay or neuter their pets to try and prevent this from continuing to happen. So for the project, I would contact the volunteer coordinator at the shelter and see if I could help with their spay/neuter events and if there was anything extra I could do, like print flyers for the events and hand them out at several different places around the county. If you would also like to help with this project, please let me know.

ReplyDeleteI work for the city of Rohnert Park, and my job has me visiting the Rohnert Park animal shelter every few weeks. My cousin, who lived at my home for a brief period, is also a veterinary technician at the shelter, so I see some of the shelter's problems first hand. Every time my cousin brought home a kitten or three to nurse, it became quite apparent that there were too many irresponsible pet owners. There was a time when Animal Shelters could keep up with the demand for temporary animal care, but now the economy is awful. Not only can the animal shelters not obtain the funds they need to care for all of the animals they have, but many pet owners find themselves without the money to take care of themselves and their families. When this occurs, the pet is usually the first thing to go, which creates even more stress and less room for the shelter.
ReplyDeleteI think whatever you do for the sake of animals in your social action project is worth investing time in. Good luck with what you decide to do. I can get you the contact information for the head of the Rohnert Park shelter if you want it.
This subject sounds like a great idea to do for the group social action project. I've always wanted to volunteer at a Animal Shelter. I can tell your very dedicated in helping animals by being a volunteer for ten years. I would also like to help out if you want and go to animal shelter events or do something extra like print flyers.
ReplyDeleteI think that is great, I have the same kind of idea. I would like to get the word out about the Rohnert Park animal shelter by way of the Oak leaf news paper here on Campus. I too think it's so sad when there are so many animals being given up or just abandoned in the streets. I a Social Action Project that has something to do with Local animal shelters is a great way to impact the community.
